I guess it’s one of those books that either gets you or it doesn’t. Mrs. Masshole became a DFW widow while I was reading it. I live near Boston, so the familiar locales doubtless helped.

Negotiating the closing costs is definitely normal, and you should at least try, but the results will vary depending on the state of the market. There have been times around here when even a home inspection contingency would have been laughed at by sellers.
Taxes? Insurance? Maintenance? The tax break may not be as much as you think - were you itemizing deductions before you bought?
