I think it is perfectly fair. Many cars were effectively ruined in the US by that regulation. Surf board bumps on the SL are ugly as sin and any owner who hasn’t pitched them in favor of the correct bumpers is a fool.

There are a TON right around 1973-1974 ruined by the 5mph bumper regulation. The worst offender IMO is the Mercedes R107. It’s 2ft longer after refresh!

my dad had to buy freightliner sprinters instead of Mercedes sprinters for his HVAC company. Even though they were pretty much identical in price, the perception, especially in the Midwest is that Mercedes is expensive and showy, even in van form, and would be a bad look for the company.
