Nissan KA24DE. Sweet as a nut, decent, usable 150 hp. Eager and willing especially with a 5-speed manual. It's like Nissan's janitor engine. Toiling endlessly, reliably and wholly unappreciated, at least compared to its turbocharged brothers.
