Packaging / Cost. When the driven wheels are near the engine, you can mount an ICE transverse and also save the interior space / cost used up by a props haft and rear drivetrain.
The I3 has it's e-engine in the back, that's why it's RWD.

I would think that shredding them are better for transportation and easier to melt down.
