I have not the fortune to have two dogs as you. Always a single one. My dogs always go to training, some are smart enough to walk at my left unleashed, some others (like my current retriever) are train wrecks but still when leashed are obedient as hell.

A dog with the most basic training will always walk at your left. The shorter the leash the better, that's why you use your left hand. As an alternative, you can hold the end of the leash with you right hand and hold the middle with your left.
