I was around 20 when I read it and got most of the references (though he usually explained them all anyway), I just remember finding the plot and writing to be dull ad simplistic.

Too much and yet, not enough, unfortunately. The third episode operated as if the first two episodes were an entire first season. That was the first mistake, as it stifled its momentum and then had to reestablish way too many things while shelving the road trip concept.

Exactly. He does such a good job with that theme that I think it’s frustrating that his Batman movies aren’t more immersed in that theme (discounting Begins somewhat).
