In Sanger's day, eugenics was considered cutting edge science and many historical figures agreed with it. Hellen Keller, Theodore Roosevelt, etc. She was not "mad" and did not have "terrible" motivations. She was motivated because she watched her mother die from the stress of multiple pregnancies.
