You actually don't "need" grapes to make wine. I brew alcohol as a hobby, and am very successful at it. What I don't drink myself, I pass off to friends and family, who then have the choice to be thankful, or reimburse me the cost so I can make more - either way I'm good with, and I don't ask for anything in return.
