Let’s not forget more recent BMW’s with interior pieces that were painted and the paint peels off in flakes. Full Napa leather has sealed grain in slightly hidden spots, using vinyl instead of leather and renaming it to sound more desirable. Let alone the number of dash displays which go bad way too early.

I have a 2000 E39 540i as well! Though I have to say that comparing any car to the E39 is almost unfair— the interior on those is damn near perfect in terms of ergonomics and build quality. My 17 year old 540i has less creaks and rattles on the inside than a 2 year old Mustang.

My biggest gripe with most American cars is that their interiors are still pretty bad. I have yet to see an American car with an interior as good as any German car. Heck, I’d say that even a 10 year old Audi has a better interior than a new American car. If I’m spending 8-10 hours a week inside a car then it better…
