I just think Terry Crews is the most delightful person, and that opinion is compounded every time I watch him in an interview. I even love the way they initially cast him in Brooklyn 99, which is as a sergeant who has to stop working in the field for a while because he gets panic attacks at the thought of dying and…
As if I needed another reason to love Terry Crews.
I'm pretty sure that's fairly common
It would also improve the show if they expanded the roles for the trans cast members next season. I hope your daughter comes around; I see where she's coming from, but the show is sooo fucking good!
I completely see where your daughter is coming from, and I honestly would love to see a show about a trans character played by a trans actor. I'd love to see hundreds, really. But Jeffery Tambor's portrayal of Maura is, no pun intended, transcendent. He doesn't play Maura as "Mort's midlife crisis" or "Mort in a…
Yes! You can tell a woman is writing that character because he's not totally unsympathetic, but the character comes off as pathetic and predatory in ways that similar characters in other shows don't. If a man wrote him, he would be the clichéd hopeless romantic trying to find himself, but in Transparent he's both that…
A cis person can never do a good job of portraying a trans character. It's nothing but disrespectful and ignorant. Stop thinking you know better than trans women and LISTEN to your daughter. You're not enabling trust by saying what you said.
Great news! Love this show.
I wouldn't get your hopes up about that. While this does address the issue of adding authenticity to the writing it does not change the fact that even in roles where people like themselves are being portrayed, trans folk are still overlooked. They're two different issues.
Writers have been telling stories about characters that are very different from them forever. Does this mean you think that every writer that doesn't only write about things they have personally lived through is arrogant?
I absolutely respect your daughter's opinion but I think Jeffrey Tambor is the best part of that show (which, on the whole, is pretty damn perfect). I completely forget about the gender question when I'm watching him and read so much more of the heartbreak Maura experiences as a parent.
Good. I think when you let a group lend their perspective and shape the feel or round the edges of stories about their lives, you get a more authentic show. You can also make it more compelling and more enjoyable.
This show is the best. I don't even know what to say other than that.
I wish to eat this five sauce concoction. Not even joking.
He searches his own name out and responds to people who aren't even tagging him on Twitter. If you say his name, he will appear. He is like the goddamn Candyman of Twitter.
GO. Go on, git. No one wants to do this again.
