Something that is less than 10 years old is not really a tradition anywhere but maybe for one celled organisms. Yes, the US as a nation isn’t as old as your dad’s house—but 10 years? Yeah, no. I’d accept practice, obsession, or stupid ass activity. But I quibble with tradition.

The de preposition (also do, da) is very common in Portuguese surnames. My string of 4 surnames starts with “da Silva”, and Silva is the only non-fancy surname I have. The preposition is in my mother’s name and in my grandmother’s as well. I don’t know exactly why people do it to be honest.
