Problem is that in the US anyway, you need to protect you trademarks in order to keep them. If Nintendo sees this as beneficial the best thing to do would be to offer a free, and narrowly scoped license, but it’s often easier for companies just to shut things down.
If Nintendo’s lawyers have never heard of Pokémon showdown by now, they either live under a rock, or have been utterly incompetent for the past 10 years.
