Of course the government is, in its present form, just as much of a defender of capitalism as any corporation (perhaps more so on the grounds that the government doesn't have to reinforce capitalism to maintain survival of its own power).

I could see the argument that the research itself is without judgement, but I question how one could divorce the act of research from the context in which it is being performed. I am a layperson when it comes to economics so I may be surprised, but I have to ask, who is funding this research and who is using its…
I love how economists can be so unabashedly in support of capitalist exploitation of the non-rich.
Honestly I'm not particularly freaked out by someone describing it as "the Hitler youth" haircut. It's unusual that they wouldn't find another way to describe it, but it doesn't seem to me that they are embracing Nazi culture or ideology. I'll save my annoyance for the next time someone claims I am forcing them to…
If you can, please go to this; it's for your own sake. It was so deeply enthralling and amazing from start to finish. Thinking about it makes me miss New York.
Foolofabrooke's point would be the one to take away, though we would be missing something if we forgot to ask about the social context of the story and what "beautiful" would have meant at the time it was written and why "fair" was the word substituted rather than just "beautiful."
So you are telling me that a dude born into unreasonable wealth, a dude who nightly brutalizes the criminals created by the system which supports his careless wealth while never once questioning that system, a dude who thinks he is justified in being the manifestation of justice simply because he can afford to spend…
I mean, it gives you tighter turns than anything you could do in a more realistic driving system, but it also makes you smack into things when you inexplicably sidestep the car. I'd rather lose the tight turning and get a system that my mind can predict by thinking in normal driving terms.
I'm a little different in my distaste for CoD. It seemed like most of those responses related to some larger representation of games or a moral system. Personally, I just don't enjoy the game. I am a huge FPS player and I actually think CoD has a very nice, in-depth weapon modification and shooting systems.
That's what I was talking about when I mentioned the class meanings of "fair."
Pretty terrible but you notice that even that game understands how a car turns. In SR2, cars actually slide sideways when you turn them. It's like you are sidestepping the car around the diameter of a circle. Why? Who thought that was okay?
I wonder how the controls have been updated from SR2. While there is a lot of clever that went into SR2, the driving and the shooting were insanely bad. The driving was quite solidly the worst in any game I have played, ever. This is not hyperbole. I cannot think of a worse driving system.
The word "fair" means simultaneously beautiful, of light complexion, and unblemished. The beauty and the paleness are sort of inseparable in the word. It is not an apolitical word. On the contrary, using it is highly political as it marks whiteness/lightness as beauty (and darkness as ugly).
It (or it's sequel, Myth II: Soulblighter; pretty much the same gameplay) is probably my favorite game ever. It's far from perfect but it has actually aged pretty well. You might even be able to get it for free through legit channels online (I'll post the link for the site maintaining Myth II files, but looking over…
I agree, but I also disagree. You have to be a little self-aware in the first place to realize you need to be self aware. That plus, I am sure that even we "self-aware" folks aren't aware of all of the ways that culture has made us horrible (either aren't aware or aren't constantly in control).
That's like Frankenstein punishing the townspeople. It's your fault: you take the licks. Not someone else.
Well, to directly answer your question I will raise another question: are all of Apple's employees being compensated fairly for their work? Think Foxconn.
I would definitely believe that the pressure to date young is there, but I think culture's pressure and allowance of that results in more men "actually" leveling their desire in that direction. At a certain point it gets hard to distinguish between cultural pressures and personal desire since our desires are created,…
But then he wouldn't have an excuse to grief, so I don't see the fun.
I don't foresee the Old Republic doing too well because it will still see the limitations of the subscription business model. Those costs just demand too much of a dedication from players in both money and time. Not that there won't be players our there who will be willing to give up the necessary amount of both,…
