It was entirely unnecessary. It served no purpose. I believe that, when handled with respect for real experiences, rape in fiction is generally okay, so long as it's not just a plot device to further the victim's (usually male) partner's emotional growth. See: proposed gang rape plot on Firefly.

The very same bastion of sensitivity.

IIRC hackers posted nude photos of her, as well as her address, online, which led to specific death threats that caused her to leave her home. Adam Baldwin tweeted her home address, and as far as I know, Joss Whedon never directly called him out on it.

Yeah, I guess reading the novel, it's most interesting to try to figure out how certain scenes will translate to film. I find the voiceover a little overdone at times, but I'm not sure how else they would communicate Claire's inner monologue.
In terms of rape on-screen, reactions are so personal and varied,

SPOILERS
Yeah, the way Jamie shames Jenny is upsetting, not just because Jamie is supposed to be ~A BETTER MAN~ than most of the male characters, but the way that the scene switches focus to Claire and Jenny's husband watching it play out in this bemused way. I wouldn't find it odd if Jamie DID shame Jenny for being

I think what made the prequel effective to me was the language barrier between some of the characters. There are a lot of stupid movies where disaster could be avoided if people just communicated with one another, but if the characters don't even speak the same language, there's no easy way to express what's happened

I find Gabaldon’s silence about assault to be frankly
bizarre within the novel, because she seems to have no problem shoehorning in her religious beliefs in the last act of the book. I understand that even someone so skeptical as Claire might turn to faith in hopeless times, but the way Gabaldon expresses it feels

The threat of rape in the show and book series is ever-present, and after reading the novel for the second time in ten years (best friend in high school was obsessed with the series, and this adaptation made me interested in seeing if I would enjoy the books more as an adult), I really hope the television writers have

Yeah, I'm sure I'd rewatch it if I had the DVDs at some point. Maybe I'll just rent them. My video store does season boxsets for five bucks.

I forgot about that scene in which Mary's introduced while bent over a motorcycle in Daisy Dukes.

The whole series used to be on Hulu, but I think it's just Netflix now. My partner has it, but I'm afraid if I put the app on my tablet, I'll never get anything done. I'm so tempted to rewatch it though.

If Chris Hardwicke hosted, I might watch, if only because his smugness fascinates me.

I thought the only people who watched the Playboy channel were tech-illiterate suburban dads.

Just remember, when you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares back at you.

My bookstore job doesn't allow internet usage and my phone can't deal with new Disqus, so I've been getting all my snark from friends. I'm managing at a film festival for the next week or so though, and the office is full of pop culture nerds who obsessively check movie news. Lots of downtime.
I saw you started

I also appreciated her presence, especially her confusion upon being given a puppy.

I really need to rewatch his filmography. One of the independent theaters here showed Best in Show recently and I stupidly neglected to go.

Do her boobs seem to follow your eyes like an old, creepy painting?

Cherish is going for the Oscar- it's gotta be both.

Think bigger: all of Jersey!
