Seriously, it's a novelty for kids to go to a bday party at their classmate's house. One year, we had our daughter's whole 3rd grade class over and all we had planned was to decorate cupcakes and play outside in the snow. It ruled and then they all went home.

For my son's 6th bday this year, we had a costume party at our house - it was cheap and fun. I could also tell the parents appreciated not having to drive 30 minutes away to hang out at Chuck E. Cheese, since they could just drop off and pick up their kiddos at our house.
