Yeah, the F-8 was the Navy’s F-104. I’ve read somehwere that early in the service it was nicknamed “ensign killer”. It was a great fighter but not so great carrier-borne fighter.

I don’t remember the details, but the story goes: an F-8 from Constellation was landing at Guantanamo and had some sort of a failure on the main landing gear. As the result, it slided off the runway and onto the rocks. The pilot was OK, and he didn’t eject.
Any landing you can walk away from....or swim. Or abseil.
I have to point out (like many others) that you don’t have to sink a ship in order to kill it. Bismarck was disabled and rendered combat ineffective long before it was sunk (or scuttled?). And you can have as much armor as you want, but with a torpedo detonating under you keel, your CIC, or propulsion knocked…
