You could also imply that the lack of inputs while driving combined with the implied safety of autopilot makes people likely to fall asleep since their risk is much lower. Maybe they think they can just rest their eyes for a second then full on fall asleep.

I agree with your take. To me his frustration seems to be not only at the large amount of debt and stress surrounding the situation that created but the feeling that he is the only one working it off.

I mean I have worked in the manufacturing industry for the last 7 years and every company cannot hire enough people. Manufacturing jobs were paying $16-19/hr depending on the level and we couldn’t get enough people.
