If the selection committee worked like most, there was a shortlist they were working off. A Dessen book being on it was probably what prompted this student to rally against it, not an irrational fear that the university selection committee would somehow choose a book aimed at tweens.
Part of what people aren’t talking about here is that publishers/authors actively campaign to be part of these programs and the authors are often invited to participate, generally with an author talk. It’s big business.
