I got a 5mw green laser a few years ago for $40 at Radio Shack. You can see the beam if it's dark out and you're looking parallel to the beam. (ie, if I'm holding the laser, I can see the beam more easily than someone a few feet away can).

GT5 has a series of endurance races where tire wear becomes a factor. You get indicators showing how the tires are holding up and how much fuel you have left, and you choose when you want to go to the pit. You lose a significant amount of grip as the tires wear down.

On loose surfaces (sand, gravel, loose dirt) you are correct, because if you lock the wheels, a mound of sand/gravel/dirt builds up in front of each tire to stop you faster.
