Even an S&P 500 index fund earns over 9% annualized over 25 years. It's all about the long game.

I'll offer a dissenting opinion on this one.

The current 25 year average annual rate of return on the S&P 500 is 9.71%. That's pushing near the bottom of what its been in the last 20 years. 2000 was above 15%. Considering that's a good benchmark, 10% return is not unreasonable if you can tolerate the short term volatility of the index.

My parents finally broke down and bought a Compaq for the house in the mid 90s. I squeezed every ounce of power and ram of it. I thought I'd snagged the deal of the century when I paid $170 shipped for 4 MB of ram. Best thing was it had a CD with a clip from the attached video.

It's not the best view, but I have a window, my screen faces the wall behind me, and I can see who is coming and going. ;-)

Giardia takes two days to kick in. Unless you are in a third world country, drink your fill, then book it to your nearest retailer that stocks Pepto. (Note: Pepto won't cure Giardia)

The nuclear option of disabling background refresh isn't a good choice. Find My Friends needs background cycles to keep your location updated. I'd recommend reviewing the apps you have installed and selectively allowing background updates.

After a week of using the GM, I've learned turning off all background refresh doesn't work. Things like find my friends won't update your position for others unless its enabled for that app.

If it's really nasty, you can replace the disposal splash guard for $5-$10 at any hardware store.

I think you misunderstand what "Golden Master" means. Traditionally, when software reaches GM state, it is ready to be sent to manufacturing for distribution on hard media. GM means it has passed QA and is ready for the public.

I agree, and I have a big family that might run the dishwasher 2x/day.

Yo Nintendo, hardware obviously isn't your thing. Perhaps you should jump on the bandwagon and port your classic NES games to iOS. I think you'll be surprised how much consumers will pay for your old stuff.

Considering there are no upgrades that have 100%+ return on investment, its much simpler to just take your upgrade funds and apply them to your mortgage balance.

Why is this on io9 and not Jezebel?

I'm better off than most for financial health, but I have very little liquid savings for a guy pushing 40. I've come to the conclusion that I was never correctly taught why to save, and my spending habits are hard to break.

I've never heard of cookies going bad before.

Hey, that's East High School in SLC, Utah, and where Disney's High School Musical was filmed. (I also spent my 9th grade year there, but they've since toren down most of the rather historic and architecturally stunning structure to build the current building.)

Based on my last two week's off, I can make up roughly 1 day a week. I'd gladly give up half my vacation time if it meant I didn't have a week's worth of backlog when I got back because no one is able/willing to do my job while I'm gone.

I always considered a mason jar a resealable container.
