This has actually made me impressed that the movie (as much of a disaster as it was) even had a (barely) coherent story considering that there was 1 screenwriter for every 2.45 minutes of screentime.

I really like 2001 but I don't think it's the greatest sci-fi movie of all time (since Blade Runner exists), and I wish it devoted more time to HAL, because that's without doubt the best part of the film.
