in Westeros (at least in the era of the show\book series), the Church has lost its once considerable political influence (thanks to the Targaryen invasion and aftermath). We do see it attempt to reclaim power via another Faith Militant uprising.

In our era of Westeros,  the Church (Faith of the Seven) doesn’t hold much political power over the Iron Throne.  In the books it states that kings are not bound to their first wife, regardless of whether heirs have been produced.
