I grew up Southern Baptist (think of the adults in the original Footloose) and tobacco was permitted because it didn’t “lead to sin” the way that alcohol did. On that front, the Baptists had a point because alcohol lowers inhibitions and tobacco doesn’t. It was one tenet of the faith that actually made some sense.
