As bad as Trump is, I was terrified of Cruz’s sudden ascendancy for that reason: he is a smart motherfucker who knew the rules of his party process inside and out. I think if things had gone even slightly differently, Cruz could’ve legitimately taken the nomination by playing the system like a fiddle, voters be damned.
