They look understated, which is intentional-understated affect contrasted with uber action-haven’t you ever been in a fight? Remaining calm until the sucker punch and volley is a genuine way to surprise an enemy. Having used the technique in my younger days before arthritis and old age, comes across as legit to me.

Agreed. Her worlds are are far immediate and subtle-magic realism as much as scifi. They really need the same quality of art direction as we saw in say, Game of Thrones, and apparently what is showing up in Valerian.
