This is a great tip, definitely helping. Went back to the game and making tons of progress with this method. I'm still having issues with the controls but this game is so so good that it's easy to overlook. 

Oh man, so that's what it is! I couldn't figure out what was tripping me up so bad. I'm having a blast with the game though, and overall so far it hasn't affected the combat too much for me.
