You’re right but your argument is that it’s better to just let the M name/brand blend into the mush of soft-roaders and fwd people movers they make these days.

“M” used to mean motorsport, so it has not always been this way. The original 1M was made for racing.

Then seeing how many M-sports they make tells me M is more definitely more focused on the visual(sport)

Got it, so M is now mostly an appearance package with slightly warmed over tuning.

The M badges are terrible and are absolutely unacceptable.

I drive a Sonic, but I get your point that (really) short gearing is a rarity. 

Makes sense, but in the real world use my 4.27 1st and 4.18 final drive makes this difficult.
