How does this rule of thumb apply if we assume one’s salary will grow over those years? I mean, this sounds great if the salary was static for your entire career.

Science agrees.
Looks like it was incredible! Too bad it was so far away from me. (Vancouver)
BMW E92 M3, E60 M5, M2? Dodge Hellcat / Demon?
As long as I can still drive for fun, I’m happy. If the government tries to take away that simple pleasure from me, I’ll put up a bigger fight than the Americans that want to protect their second amendment.
It’s the purist mentality. The same reason purist Porschephiles hold air cooling in the highest regard, and water cooling as garbage. These are the same people who refuse to make a car better simply because it didn’t come stock like that. Hellcat-swapped Prius? Awesome.
“This is a dick measuring contest that requires the winner to be decided with a micrometer.”
Ape Escape, those were the days!
What a build! Can’t wait to see it when it’s finished
“I’m not sure what I’d do without cars. I’m not very interesting and don’t enjoy much other than watching (and making) things go vroom”
Ugh. I know exactly what you mean. The problem is that Harley owners seem to warm them up by revving the hell out of them and use that obnoxious noise so that EVERYONE can know they have a Harley. I had a neighbour who would pull his out of the garage, start it, beat on it for an hour in his driveway, and put it back…
I was always a fan of your writing, but I never knew we have the same car! Great article, I understand completely. The star on the hood is like the North Star, it guides us safely to our destinations.
I would say that 300zx in the google images collage does qualify as sporty though
Great post! Let’s see. 300ZX, one in black, one in pearl white, two (one current, forever car) in aztec red. I had a silver b5 a4, a really beautiful blue e46, a black TL type-S, and currently on DD duty, a dolphin grey 4,2L S4. So, black and red lead for me, tied at 2.
Yup, I agree
Great article! I also have a ‘90 twin turbo which I think is just a brilliant car. I don’t plan on ever selling it. Mine cost $14,500 CDN and I would estimate I’ve put another $15,000 into it. I’m somewhat jealous of your costs. Good luck with it!
E46 M3, without a doubt. I had a 330CI and enjoyed it immensely. More realistically, I’m waiting for the Tokyo auto show this year to see the new reveals from Nissan, Toyota, Mazda, and Honda.
Clearly considerable effort went into this Audi, and yet it’s all let down, in my opinion, by the afterthought iPad-stuck-on-the-dashboard navigation screen. Can automakers seriously not be bothered anymore to integrate them smoothly into the dashboard?
Brilliant idea! I think the idea of a forever car doesn’t get thrown around enough by enthusiasts. I hope to buy mine in 2019, you got to have something to look forward to, right?
I would agree this is CP pricing, but the emission components he is referring to, I believe, are the EGR bits. It’s a common mod in the Z32 community. Mine has been deleted as well. I have a 1990 Twin Turbo with 70,000 (ish, I’m from metric Canada) miles on it.
