I know this post is ancient but I can’t help it. It is not donkey’s years it’s cockney rhyming slang, donkey’s ears= years but everyone says it wrong (including me) so donkey’s years has become the common usage based on everyone miss hearing I guess? I used to think donkey’s lived forever or something.
