I’m glad McCain has some kind of morals and is sticking up for the idea of doing things the right/normal way, but his statement mentions how ACA was “rammed through” and I out loud said “shut the fuck up” at work.

That’s unfortunately been happening for a long time for hourly workers - most of Ehrenreich’s jobs were part time and didn’t offer benefits, for example. I think this was sometimes rationalized by thinking that these were temporary/entry level jobs primarily designed for young people still living at home, but it was…
I’m self employed and clients call me all hours. I know I’ve lost business because I refuse to respond outside of work hours. But fuck, I refuse to work myself to death
I recently reread Nickel and Dimed, and the tragedy is that things have gotten WORSE for hourly workers since then. Ehrenreich was at least able to get a jobs with set shifts for the most part, which is critical to being able to work multiple jobs or juggle work and school and/or childcare. Many larger companies today…
That was a fabulous critique. I immediately went back for another look. Now I can’t.
Nickled and Dimed came out in the early 2000s. (I remember reading it in 2005 right after Hurricane Katrina, and it had just recently been issued in paperback.) I read an interview with Ehrenreich for the tenth anniversary of the book. She said that if anything, things had gotten worse since she wrote it, but she had…
Yep, it sure was. I made decent money, if the job was stuck to the actual hours in the advertisement. Heck, if they paid me overtime it probably would have helped my mood somewhat! We were salaried as social workers though, so no dice. The recovery home was $10/hour... and no overtime somehow. If I wasn’t young and…
Oh come on, she’s married to an evil doll, not Slenderman!
I’d probably like his paycheck during my 13-15 hour days as a social worker, that’s for sure! Glad to have left that career, believeeeee me.
You mean she wasn’t responsible for ‘architecting’ the shoes?
K.J. Apa, who is currently making headlines because he fell asleep at the wheel after a 14.2-hour work day and crashed his car into a light pole.
Right? Like maybe I’d treat the anti-choice folks like the actually have a valid stance if they stood up to shit like this. But they don’t, and won’t. Fuck those cunts.
Another problem may be Vieques is famous for constantly being bombed by the U.S. military.
He was a real bad dude. Bad dude. Tremendously bad.
I absolutely love Vieques! A friend of mine is sharing regular updates from the Vieques Humane Society on Facebook, but unfortunately there’s still not a lot of information getting out of there yet.
Vieques is absolutely magical. Since you were there, its tourism industry has grown a bit and things were going ok (still had the wild horses and the empty or near-empty beaches) but this storm has caused a lot of damage. There were some heartbreaking photos of the Malecon, the seaside walk.
I’ve spent a lot of time in Fajardo and just saw images from the area... seeing places you love devastated sucks, and I am sick thinking about the people who live there and what they have been through and will go through in the coming months.
Ehh, at least as long as he isn’t a weightlifter at all, you should be good.
The dumbest are the loudest it seems and right now they have the wheel.
