That's...shocking. It also illustrates why I am hesitant to visit the south. Ever.

That allegation is particularly disgusting. The employee who came forward with that story basically said that in order to keep one's job they had to do these "favors" for her. In an area where work is difficult to find these guys really have no choice. She completely takes advantage of her employees.
Using the n-word isn't even the worst thing she's being accused of. The bullshit she allowed to go on in her restaurants is incredibly appalling. Casual racism, sexism, verbal and physical abuse. Even if she never used the word she deserves what she's getting right now.
If you have a gap in your top front teeth, for God's sake leave it!! Do you have any idea how sexy a tooth gap is? As for the bottom crookedness, go ahead and get that corrected. Just leave the gap alone!
The "uhhh, no" comment refers to the idea that humans don't have agency, and that we simply obey the "laws of the universe." We do have agency. We can think, and reason, and come to conclusions based on evidence. We are not merely animals responding to evolutionary cues.
"I thought human beings were just giant clusters of molecules that obey the mechanical laws of the universe." Uhhh, no.
I totally understand that the OP didn't mean to imply that white=racist. My point was simply that the response the OP elicited in PortraitOfMmeX is a pretty typical response to saying "white people love saying the n-word." The conversation about racism must include white people simply because they/we are typically the…
There is no free will? Are you serious? So she gets a pass because it's just the way her brain works? Do pedophiles get a free pass because that's how their brains are wired? Do rapists get a free pass? How about serial killers? Yes, I'm slipping into hyperbole here, but the point remains. We are humans, and as such,…
Wrong. It absolutely is your place to call someone out if they're being racist. Period. Nobody gets a free pass.
I don't think you understand how the brain works.
Ok, but nobody was asking you solve anything. All I said was using "white people" as a synonym for "racist" isn't helpful for the conversation. I completely agree that the knee-jerk "but I'm not like that!" response is also not helpful, but the conversation also shouldn't be "white = racist." I engage in a lot…
"Nobody is making excuses for racism."
Just because you aren't black doesn't mean you don't have a voice when it comes to racism... of any kind.
My "generational privilege?" I'm over 40. I definitely wasn't raised in an ultra PC society...
Poor Paula! People are talking behind her back! I feel so sorry for her...
I'm not jumping to PortaitOfMmeX's defense, but I do kind of see his/her point. The minute "white people" gets thrown out as a synonym for "racist" there are all kinds of eye-rolls happening. It just isn't helpful. There has to be a better way to frame the conversation, yes?
Bummer. Seitan is my go-to protein source. I love it!
Uh-oh, "dietary requirements" may make seitan a no-go for you. It's gluten. Just pure wheat gluten. You can get it pre-made/packaged (Upton's is an amazing brand - their seitan "bacon" is so delicious I can hardly stand it!), but you can also make it yourself. It's super easy to make, but can be a bit time-consuming.…
Have you tried Seitan? I don't do well on tofu either, especially the heavily processed variety, but Seitan is great! Actually, I much prefer the taste of seitan too.
She's the fun sassy one who plays by her own rules!
