I'm actually running live with NTFS compression. Some files haven't been compressed at all, and if it did, it's on about 10% to 20% scale. Performance wise, however, if there is any compromise in the actual performance of launching various apps (CS suite mostly), I haven't noticed.

If you're thinking file allocation via file system, then you're both right and wrong. Right in that, no, there isn't really savings on an actual how much free space you have type of deal. Wrong in that in sequential reads (at least with HDDs, not SSDs), where the drive head needs to move from sector to sector…

Speaking of saving space on a SSD, would there be any benefit to compressing your drive using the built in disk compression scheme offered up by the OS? And if so, would that free up further "space" as it were or would it be just sort of a placebo?
