It’s a thing, unfortunately, because minimum wages in the USA are so low. In Australia, people don’t generally tip, but minimum wage is just over $18 per hour, and then there’s over time and time and a half (at least they used to have those).

Since we are coming up to the second season’s start, the end of the previous season shouldn’t be that much of a spoiler, and the book has been out for years.
