The problem is that Mercedes has virtually no competition in the 1980s. People wistfully cite the W123, but when the car came out, it was competing against the E12 and E28 from BMW and that was it.
The cheapest Benz should be a well built well driving high quality car that can cost a lot more than mainstream cars the same size. It should be more quiet, more comfortable, more stable and safer. It should be able to reach a higher mileage than mainstream cars while not receiving much more than regular scheduled…
