Maybe it’s the appetite for a James Gunn-style Suicide Squad sequel that’s not there. The original movie was edited against Ayer’s wishes but there’s still enough of his style there and maybe that’s what appealed to its fans and what gave it a lot of legs at the box office.

I think the series begans production before the movie was released. And it really only flopped because of bad timing with the Delta variant, which made people prefer the safety of the HBO Max version.
