The three Hobbit films combined grossed a shade under $3 billion just from the cinema box office alone. To paraphrase Dick Jones from OCP in Robocop, "Who cares if they were good or not?".
I can get Stephen King's antipathy to The Shining as it was a very personal story full of experiences to him in terms of Jack and his experiences with addiction and well, Kubrick did what Kubrick does which can put the original creator of the source material's nose out of joint (hardly a unique experience).
On the other hand, they were performances so powerful, Nicolas Cage broke the otherwise immovable Abed Nadir.

Well, it depends, Bruce Lee was a highly adept martial artist but he wasn't a military trained killer either. They don't necessarily fight according to tournament rules for starters.
Babylon 5 has also had a terrible rate of attrition. A lot of the cast have died on or around age 60.
Ignoring something and hoping it goes away can even be a devolution if you don't deal with it and especially don't learn from it.
