Props to Switched at Birth for probably being the only mainstream representation of asl since Children of a Lesser God?

I loved Paris Je T'Aime (which I believe was actually more diverse than the NYC one) and besides being white as hell, the NYC ones were just compete duds. Boring af
That's what's so likeable about this show despite its flaws. There is an earnest display of diversity that is joyous and not overly-encumbered by the minority struggle but doesn't shy away from acknowledging those struggles either.
Or he can just be himself. Someone is always branded as the new someone else and people of color are almost never allowed their own lane or perspective just measured against the mostly white standard. Also, Woody Allen is gross.
They do this on Switched at Birth pretty often. Love seeing ASL on TV it's a very powerful language and demographically underrepresented on screen/film. Kudos to MoN.
Yeah I really appreciate how good they are about this stuff. Any other show and Black British would be 'confusing.' The Black-Italian woman he mistakes for Sarah - Crazy. I say this because far too many news outlets identify Idris Elba and Chiwetel Ejiofor as A-A not getting the nuance of diaspora.
I was bummed (but obvs understood) when she pumped the brakes on their kiss. Not that I think that they should date but it would be totally believable for them to just make out once and continue to be platonic friends. Priya was my favorite and I am still really bummed about Sarah :-(
Honestly I can see many men of all races and ethnicities - and some Black men too, tbh - overlooking this. However, It is absolutely worth severing ties over because it speaks to the sort of wide-eyed "What?! Moi, racially insensitive? That makes YOU racist." ignorance that is infuriating and impossible to combat.
I was indifferent to Aziz before listening to Modern Romance on audiobook. It was so insightful about the maze of modern dating but went a long way towards combating the notion that the way 'we' currently date is a sign of the fall of civilization yada yada yada. It's new and different and we're all navigating it in…
Loving this season so far.
That's a fair assessment, maybe I am not quite hate watching but mildly dislike watching? I think it takes itself way too seriously when it's really more of a crime-themed soap opera.
Everything that needed to be said about this episode has been said. Very touching and relevant because it's impossible to be positive all the time but its important to not be consumed by the negativity. That song just snuck up on me with all the feels.
I love seeing Tommy make Ghost eat it for being a dumb ass, that Milan reveal was amazing and that Cheshire cat you gotta kill Angela convo bought me so much joy.
Not what I was expecting at all. I think people wanted/expected gritty realism instead of myth and whimsy but it's nice to see the theatricality of that era, disco, hip-hop, poverty without it being maudlin.
This was my concern, there's not a single film of his I enjoy and the birth of hip-hop in the Bronx requires sensitivity and subtlety that I think is not his forte but I liked the first episode enough to keep watching.
There are also bougie 'frites' places like Pomme Frites in New York and probably other big cities as well. Love pizza but it's easier to eff up, have definitely had more sub-par to mediocre pizza than fries.
I was disappointed that the story lets her off easy by focusing on the underlying issues. It was really gross seeing her encourage impressionable kids like that for jokes with consequences and even more strange that the older kids went along with it easily. Such a cop out.
The Carmichael Show feels like a stand-up routine with a plot point built around it. The main character delivers his lines like a routine and for me everything about it is cliche from the racially ambiguous girlfriend to the offensively conservative parents. I love DAG and Loretta Divine and I wish I could see them in…
Light skinned =/= 'mixed race' Obviously it's subjective but she looks pretty brown skinned to me.
Possibly. Hardly makes her anymore 'mixed race' than the average black American.
