This is so like the old sci-fi short stories I read (and wrote, clumsily) as a teenager that it moved me unexpectedly. They were tales that were all about the mood, rather than any need for mad action scenes. On The Beach comes to mind, in a cinematic link...
Scotland has a statutory right to access that was often mistaken for a complete freedom to trespass: it’s not that, but it does offer a very wide ranging right to cross land assuming you are doing no harm and not putting people in fear, or damaging things.
