The MCU started slow with Iron Man, built its cinematic universe deliberately with a few more solo movies, before taking the big chance, the game changer, 2012's Avengers. The success of that film is what made every studio want to get in on the cinematic universe bandwagon- it proved the concept.

It never ceases to amaze me how studios manage to so frequently miss the point. I think they tend to get lazy and over-simplify and think “people want a comic book based expanded universe. Give them that” and miss the point that people don’t want any one thing in particular.
