This. I keep wondering how many people would walk up to a 94 year old WW2 veteran and tell them that due to the current rise of nationalism and fascism globally their successes meant nothing.

I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THIS TIME IN THE COMMENT SECTION OF THIS FANTASTIC ARTICLE, THAT I FULLY AGREE WITH, TO POINT OUT THAT POE, FINN, AND ROSE’S STORYLINE WAS NOT “POINTLESS” AS I’VE HEARD FROM COUNTLESS PEOPLE. IF THEY HADN’T BEEN CAPTURED, HUX WOULDN’T HAVE KNOWN ABOUT HOLDO’S ESCAPE PLAN, AND THE ENTIRE THIRD OF…
“... who aren’t sharing notes.”
Kathleen Kennedy and the story group absolutely know where it’s going. But that doesn’t mean Rian Johnson can’t pick up the phone and say “hey, Snoke is kinda shitty, I’m gonna kill him off in the second act” and have her go “OK.”
Me too. And I suspect that many of those people will not be happy no matter what kind of SW movie is put out there.
And they would’ve complained if whichever fan theories about Snoke’s identity and Rey’s parents’ identities were indeed confirmed, or if Luke was Obi Wan 2.0 instead of a cantankerous old curmudgeon. I for one dug all of the subversions of expectations.
I’m so over the fan boy haters. Most of their vitriol stems from: “my pet theories didn’t come true, so now I’m going to throw a tantrum”. Puulease.
“Besides, as Johnson explains, the movie would’ve been bad if it had just rattled off confirmation for everyone’s favorite theories and followed the exact plot people expected it to, and he would have had people whining at him on Twitter anyway.”
Because Kathleen Kennedy is really the person making the final decisions on the direction of the story, not JJ or Rian.
I suspect the same people complaining that this movie is too different are the same ones who complained that TFA was just a remake of ANH.
I knew even during The Force Awakens that this trilogy is being made without any planning or forethought about what the entire story is going to be. It’s just 3 movies made by 3 (at the time) directors whose only job is to make 1 movie at a time and who aren’t sharing notes.
I really enjoyed Force Awakens and the Last Jedi. I assumed from the jump that the first movie would be vintage Star Wars to regain trust after the prequels and the second would then be cleared to launch the saga in new directions. I think both movies succeeded in what they were trying to accomplish, and both were…
Haven’t seen the movie yet, so I’m going to jump in here before anyone starts casually mentioning the ending of the Last Jedi or anything:
Ah but isn’t that the beauty of the film, as with the scene in Ben’s home with Luke standing over him they both saw the same thing and they both saw something very different. Point of view can be subjective and for many they saw what you didn’t. Kind of the underlying point of the entire film really.
Poe followed it up with lethal stupidity.
Don’t you mean, “from a certain point of view”? :)
FROM MY POINT OF VIEW THE JEDI ARE EVIL
It’s the 9th film in the franchise. It can be both at this point, honour the traditions and be self aware enough to comment on them.
This is not the Star Wars sequel you were looking for, this is just a tribute.
It’s both. They are not mutually exclusive.
