The article refers to 'the ugly norm of those headline-making deaths', which is accurate. 'Guy shot dead by criminal' doesn't usually make the headlines. 'Guy shot dead by cop' does, even though - because - it's much less common. It's a 'Man Bites Dog' kind of thing.

Skins was never supposed to be realistic. The point some critics missed is that its exaggerated, overdramatic, hyperreal style captured how it feels to be a teenager. No British teen actually lived like the ones in Skins, but a lot of them looked at the show and felt 'yeah, my life feels just like that sometimes'.
