I don’t want to artificially pump in outside noise. It is actually louder than if I just had non-noise canceling head phones. 

Any over the ear headphones in the same price range as these (or even a little cheaper) will always sound way better than tiny AirPods. It’s just physics. Pretty much anything by Bose and a few others in the same price range is usually a little better than Apple.

I actually don’t want noise canceling on my AirPods. I have noise canceling for when I need it (on planes) with better headphones. But, when I’m walking around the city, I want to be able to hear some things and people for safety reasons while I’m listening to lo-fi podcasts.
