Part of my issue is that I feel like the man kind of occupies a specific niche. And while he’s done very well for himself in that niche, he doesn’t have what I would call an incredibly diverse resume when it comes to exploring other genres. If these comments were coming even from someone like Steven Spielberg (a man

This seems like an odd position for him to take when it’s easier to create a film than it’s ever been and he’s actively railing against the distribution methods that allow those films to be easily seen.

I suspect that part of the problem is that both high- and low-culture are vanishing into the ever-expanding middle-brow center. Comics may have been lowbrow, at least when Jack Kirby was at his prime, but the MCU is not. The glossy production values and ready-made lessons of the Marvel movies have little to do with

Parents and students are absolutely “customers” of the school system. You use a service, you’re a customer. X does Z for the benefit of Y, Y is X’s customer. Any job that claims to not have customers of some form isn’t doing anything for anyone and is of no use.

Teacher here. I’m with the board members. During the pandemic, the parents most eager for in-person instruction are either A.) deeply concerned with the mental health of their only child or B.) looking to get their uncivilized brats out of the house. And there are a lot more people in column B than in column A.

Oh no, he’s the kind of Libertarian who thinks that the idea of systemic injustice is nefarious groupthink rather than a commonplace observation. These dudes have a knack for outwitting themselves to the extent that anything they say is in good faith.

Gotta hope. I didn’t expect D3 to be such a great couch game, but here we are. I never want to go back.

Well!

Apparently, the pandemic version of me shoutsMORTAL KOMBAT” at the computer whenever something about this movie shows up on the internet. Sorry neighbors.

My earliest memory of him is when he repeatedly bullied Chelsea Clinton - who was 12 or 13 at the time - by referring to her as the White House dog. More than once.

the mention of Hero actually reminded me of Red Cliff which is an incredible (and incredibly long) movie

How is the collector’s market for Cancel Clutter?

The Girl with All the Gifts is wonderful, and I first watched it because of the write-up on this site however long ago. Child actors are usually a red flag for me, but Sennia Nanua gives a naturalistic, sensitive performance. And the score fucking owns.

That could be true. I think that Guinness has more cultural prestige, but obviously that doesn’t translate into fame. In any case, I feel like we’re agreed here on the basic premise.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon may have gotten all the accolades, but a few years later, Hero took that genre of martial arts film to a whole new level, incorporating even more beautiful costumes and weapons along with an epic scale.

This is crazy, Christopher Lee was in the movie, to put a big name in the movie. The movie in no way made him famous.

On the other hand, if you take Christopher Lee out of Gremlins 2: The New Batch (or relegate him back to his level of fame back in 1990, when the film came out) then these three actors have more clout than all the other actors in the first two movies combined.

IIRC, Ford didn’t trust his editors either.

Arguably, if it’s been years and it’s still about, it hasn’t been successfully rethought.

It didn’t have to be like that! The Flash season 1 was a low budget triumph. A whimsical and fun-filled celebration of silver age silliness, with a talented cast giving surprisingly heartfelt performances. It was soooo good. Then some edgelord sank his fangs into it and turned it into a dreary, angst-filled slog.
