I want to complain that this sequel will not reach the heights of Boorman weirdness, or the depths of Schrader’s melancholy, but basically every part of this series has worked at some level.

I’m curious how Blumhouse will now be able to attract top tier actors for his movies post covid as I read that the only way he signs them is if he offered back end revenues like a cut of ticket sales since he doesn’t like going over a budget of $3m per movie.

So, I’d hope any remake, reboot, or sequel would be able to capture that, but I feel like it’s going to be all spider-walks, head spinning, and quija boards.

I’ve never seen Exorcist III, but I may be the only person besides Martin Scorsese who likes Exorcist II.

I question Mank being on this list at all. I really do!

...where’s Mulan?

Tepid take: She is okayish and these directors might as well give their screen credit to the many special effects houses that make their footage.

Games like Anthem and Fallout 76 feel like casualties of all the economic trends we like to complain about. The publishers are leaning on established brands and developers to generate interest around games-as-a-service, but this leaves the studios with huge ambitions, vague goals, and a release date.

This seems like accountability theater all around. Both Sony and CDPR have now taken visible steps to calm angry customers, and removing the game will keep less informed customers from stumbling into a pre-patched nightmare. But the publisher knew that the game was not finished on PS4, and Sony could always screen

Some Hollywood bigwigs and theater owners are raging about this concession to the pandemic, and we do hope the big-screen experience will be able to make a comeback one day. But in the current moment, our movie-hungry eyeballs are grateful there’s an alternative.

Not really sure how simp and incel could be used in a friendly manner, but whatever.

Of course it’s okay to love bad art. But, often enough, the people who remind us that “art is subjective” and “some things are just FUN” are not children with quirky homegrown taste; they are adults defending mega-popular franchises.

As for the effects, save for one or two examples, they’re mostly practical, which is a welcome change from most other CGI-heavy DC films, including the first Wonder Woman. Whether it’s Diana running super fast or swinging through the air, Jenkins and the team did as much for real as possible, and the result is the

Oshii recalled something that Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki once said: A work can appeal to a million people, and anything above that is a social phenomenon.

Wow, Denis Villeneuve expresses the exact same stance as Chris Nolan, yet io9's article remains completely snark-free and respectful with respect to Villeneuve.

I will take a coherent sense of character over better action any day.

I was so disappointed with Prometheus. It felt so close to being a great, interesting movie that just tripped over its own feet in the third act.

They assembly cut of Alien 3 is a damn fine film...and Resurrection is a wonderfully arch, pulpy sci-fi flick (and proto-Firefly).

I’m the opposite on the AvP films. The first one has Sanaa Lathan. The second one I struggled to stay awake through.

Yup. Good pallete cleanser from them and jj.
