They don’t need to “solve speech.” The task of game moderation is narrower than that. A list of slurs that will get you suspended for x time if you say them y times does not seem particularly problematic. And statistically generated standards for disconnection and friendly fire are already in place on many games.…
This will not end well for anyone involved; publishers, devs, gamers - this is gonna be a mess. A unifying standard between fanbases is one pickle, but across cultures? Nationally? Globally? Impossible.
Hawkeye from the comics could easily have had a standalone movie. The movie reduced him to a side character. It isn’t inherent to the character.
Is... that thing... just two huge eyes and a singular ball sack?
Assault Girls is at least a weird enough failure to justify a rental. I like the idea of a simulated world where the players have so little left to do that they just wander around in a state of Beckett-esque ennui. The contrast between the barrenness of the setting and the manic over-acting of the performers could be…
I love that the boss chamber for Ornstein and Smough is so full of orange dots that it glows from wall to wall. It would be hilarious if someone modded the game so that a number in the corner rates your probability of death as you move through the map.
The line about La La Land was unnecessary.
I have vivid memories of stumbling onto FLCL during one of those long summers home from college. And it was an experience on par with watching Liquid TV or Toolz or Mystery Science Theater for the first time: I had no idea what the hell I was watching, but I was transfixed.
Here’s your John Scalzi review https://whatever.scalzi.com/2018/03/11/thoughts-on-a-wrinkle-in-time/
I think that’s one of the problems, as Eli Wallach said in The Holiday, when box office receipts are reported like baseball scores. It tends to warp our expectations unless we’re really careful about the media analytics.
So while this is not technically what I would call a “bad thing”- engaging with this sort of nostalgic indulgence for its own sake- it could reasonably be seen leading to a bad place.
I wonder if this kind of nostalgia is really a bad thing. It would be one thing if it were pushing the idea that things were actually better in the past, but this is just about fondness for things from the past. ‘80s nostalgia produced Stranger Things. Hell, even Star Wars was a product of nostalgia.
Here’s a parallel I’ve yet to see called out: Isn’t Ready Player One just another gloss on a Who Framed Roger Rabbit template?
90 minutes is for everything except for classic kung-fu movies, which are 100 minutes because they would shoot ten reels..
Well, now I understand the title.
I knew that this was going to be a farce, but it’s just the icing on the cake that the executives of gaming companies are being put on an equal footing with a concern troll like Grossman, who has no discernible expertise in psychology, psychiatry, sociology, or — to the best of my knowledge — any field of expertise…
Sadly the cinematography Oscar most frequently goes to the Most Cinematography, to movies that scream “CAMERAWORK.”
It’s got to change, and I hope it will with people like Rachel Morrison and Reed Morano leading the way.
I meant more the fact that she was Asian, but yes, her powers were more like “what does the story need right now?”
