I care about the race and gender of a character depending on the setting. It’s set in 1960s New Orleans, you need to understand that 1960s new Orleans isn’t a ideal place for Black folks. SO yes it will play a VERY large part of the story.

Because it takes place in New Orleans in the 60's. I love my city but we definitely dont have a squeaky clean past when it comes to race relations so having a black protagonist during this time period is interesting as Stephen pointed out.
