The film you wanted to see, you already saw it as a masterpiece in anime form. Both with the movies and the tv series. The film you really want is a third ghost in the shell anime movie with an original story and more thought provoking philosophical concepts from director Mamoru Oshii.

+1! I’ve had so many of these discussions, both as a woman who is into geek culture and who games.

As someone has been gaming for over three decades and works in the gaming industry, I generally get two reactions:

I thought my wife was into gaming when we met. Turned out she was just saying she was into a lot of the same things to spend time with me. I did manage to get her to play a few games, not just casuals - she was into Morrowind for a bit, and played through all 3 Mass Effect games - but there were always dry stretches

Stephen (and team): I sincerely appreciate this. I would like to remind anyone reading this and feeling the way that you and I are feeling right now: democracy is a participatory sport. Yes, the US is a republican democracy, so some of the weight is off our shoulders, but if all you did leading up to this election

I think you’re kinda understating what happens in the “playboy” routine. Yuri doesn’t just incorporate feminine sexuality, he embodies a female role. His speech patterns change to female speech in Japanese. But the role he is taking on is NOT passive, it’s proactive. The character is supposed to be flirtatious and

The “far future” of 2029. And it’s established that Japan has become more multicultural — in that it has accepted millions of refugees from China and the Korean Peninsula after the WWIII. The Western people are still a tiny minority and the country’s relationship with the American Empire has gotten increasingly

Anime characters always look Japanese to Japanese audiences, unless they’re given specific markers to show that they’re not. The Japanese don’t identify themselves through Western-given “Asian”-markers, like slanted eyes or yellow skintone — they look normal, while Westerners have big noses, big chins and blonde hair.

If you’re so faithful then where are my cute robotoic tank droids who shoot guns and philosophise about life and existentialism.

You’re right, but if the genre wants to succeed as a medium, it needs to grow up with its audience. I’m so glad the people commenting so far in the same vein as you seem to be in the minority. I’m not promoting censorship. I’m promoting anime with better story telling than trying to get a 15 year old’s dick hard.

She’s offering her opinions and criticism on a media genre. Do you think she shouldn’t be allowed to do this? Is there something about Japanese culture and media that says it should be free of all criticism?

I think it’s more, “I want to enjoy your art, but you continue to insert sexual harassment of minors that’s not only disgusting, but also completely out of place from the rich story that’s developed so far. Please stop insulting my intelligence so i can enjoy your medium.”

Yep. I was looking for a good anime to watch since I haven’t seen anything good that’s recent besides attack on titan. Took a look, wife seemed to approve, we sat down to watch it, annnnd..... nope. Unwanted grope within 5 minutes of what looked like an otherwise interesting story. What happened to shows like FMA and

This article is on point. As a straight male, I too find the gratuitous fan service off-putting and it makes it difficult to share anime with friends and family. However, when the show is about fan service and the plot justifies it, like Kill-la-Kill, it can be extremely enjoyable.

I’ve tried and tried every few years to get back into anime, but I’ve also found the ‘fanservice’ more and more off-putting every time I go back. It never seems to evolve or change as the years go by... if anything, it keeps getting worse and worse.

You guys are challenging a rather dangerous flaw in a massive industry, but you have my respect.

Fan service is fine by me if the show is upfront about it (no pun intended). If the theme of the show is sexy humour, or whatever, then go for it.

Honestly, as a straight white (no longer teenage) male, anime fan service really pushes me away from the medium. I want to be able to get into shows and share them with people who aren’t already fans without getting weird looks because of random hypersexualization. Not saying it should go away completely but it

One of my favorite anime in recent years is The Seven Deadly Sins I wrote a pretty glowing recommendation for it over on AniTAY however one thing that struck me was how they treated Elizabeth. Like in this really good action adventure fantasy series where they’d always have one character randomly grope Elizabeth and

I’m a woman and I’m into gaming. So are most of my female friends. Although I know a lot of guys who think it’s a super uncommon thing, so they fawn over any woman who remotely plays games, even if they have very little in common, or they have total opposite tastes in games. It’s admittedly kind of tiring. Admittedly,
