“The year before that they was wearing trash bags”

She would need to apply for a pardon.

VAWA only applies if you are the victim of a legal resident or citizen, U-visa is for crime victims but she needs to press charges against the boyfriend first and then she would need that a police officer agree to sign a certificate which states she was helpful to the police, without this certificate she can not apply

If she were Mormon, the former might worth criticism, and if she were an evangelical vegetarian I could see you litigating the latter. BUT SHE’S NEITHER

Those things take about two years to process and it requires local law enforcement to certify that she is cooperating with a prosecution of some sort. If she already has a removal order, they won’t delay removal for two years.

Agree. Tough to say who instigated without watching the previous possessions, but it looks to me like #11 threw a cheap elbow and #30 wasn’t having it and throws #11 halfway down the court. #11 probably thinks that he looks like a chump (accurate), so he escalates.

#I’mOnTeam30

What’s stunning is that EXISTING rules don’t seem to matter anymore.

I’m gonna guess in this case she couldn’t. From the linked article, the victim “had been deported six times since 2010 — apparently after arrests for crimes including possession of stolen mail, false imprisonment and assault.”

The VAWA is on Trump’s budgetary chopping block. He won’t repeal it, but republicans do want to totally defund all its programming. So...I hope that she can still use it while it still exists (for now). I wouldn’t count on it being around through the end of 2017.

This shit, apparently.

Why is it so hard for police to understand that denying people their rights helps no one; not them, not the DA, and not the people they’ve arrested.

Way to go, guys.

Are you kidding me? Well at least now the fucker can get his guns legally since they’re trying to get Obama’s bill to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill turned over. Is there no justice anymore?

I never said I was *only* scared and if you read carefully you would have noticed there was also some sadness in there.

Current or past gang membership is a high priority factor for ICE and a disqualifier for DACA. Police keep lists of suspected gang members and it’s possible to be on one without ever being convicted of anything - and it can be really hard to even know if you’re on one of the lists.

Apparently in our new world order, lawyers are now heroes. And I’m not being sarcastic - they’re out on the frontlines trying to extract people from the nightmarish situations that 45 has created.

There are states and local areas who have laws and ordinances that making belonging to a gang a secondary offense, I believe. They have to be very narrowly written to pass Constitutional muster, though. But, yeah, we do have states, counties, and cities with anti-gang laws.

While I’d definitely like to see fewer rather than more, and while NONE of them should be privately operated, a detention centr in a border state does’t strike me as odd. In fact, Tacoma is the only one for hundreds and hundreds of miles. Here is a map. They are in fewer states than I thought they’d be:

Because the Dems also depend on money from the agri lobby.

Glad a law firm is immediately acting to help this guy and hopefully others like him. I’d rather they not have to help but it’s always refreshing to know there are good people in this world ready to stand up for justice.
