The time travel crazy theory I heard (no idea how widespread this is a friend said he read it somewhere online) is that Shmi Skywalker is actually Rey having gone back in time and the whole 9 movies form one big loop. Oh I agree completely that Abrams’ has no regard for the franchises he plays in. I just figure “clone” has been said enough times that he might have decided to riff on cloning.

Those background characters were not boring. They were pretty much neutral, being nothing but background. Really not the same thing. and that “whole book” was only a short story each. So I’d say they got attention proportional to their fan interest.
