I like the idea of generating immersion like that. But in practice it falls apart for me. When was the last time you played an everquest type game?

Honestly, I think the genre is in a better place now. Those old games had extremely demanding time requirements, which have been dramatically simplified for today's generation in a good way.

I agree. And even though I find myself frequently disagreeing with the positions taken in the articles. It's great that video game writing seems to be getting better — though I wish Tom Bissel would write about games again.

In retrospect, it's kind of mind boggling how much time everything in that game took. Leveling took dozens of hours per level. Getting a group depending on class could take 4 or 5 hours. Getting from the hub to the zone where you wanted to level could take an hour. A wipe could take an hour to recover from. Farming…

But nothing was better than waiting in the dunes as a thief for hours being totally unable to solo anything.

Final Fantasy XIV ended with the moon crashing into the planet.

One of my big issues with video game writing is a relative dearth of material on how the sausage is made ( especially material on this that is well- written and understandable to the common man). This doesn't have those problems. This is a truly fascinating read.
